Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes. Read With Me

I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons
I Can't Make This Up: Life Lessons - Kevin Hart, Neil Strauss
I Picked Up This Book Because: Kevin Hart wrote it. You dog on right I’m going to read it.

This book depicts the beginnings of Kevin Hart. From short kid with zero free time, thanks to his mom’s determination to keep him off the streets, to the superstar funny man we all know and love today. It wasn’t an easy trip and his success didn’t happen overnight but it is so inspiring. Kevin has a drive and determination that so few people have. His ability to shrug off the negative, the rejections, the setbacks have surely served him well.

The book covers his personal life also. From growing up with a semi estranged dad who was on drugs to his mother’s protectiveness to his relationship with his ex-wife and the beginnings of his relationship with his current wife. I love the way he speaks of his children and how he wants them to know that they have because of his hustle and they will need to develop their own once they are adults.

I feel like this book is perfect for anyone who is ready to chase their dream. Who needs motivation and encouragement to keep going even with the plan is not working as you thought it would.

The Random Thoughts:

I would have loved to listen to this in audiobook form. If Kevin narrates it's going to be amazingly funny.

Bound Together
Bound Together (Sea Haven) - Christine Feehan
Sisters of the Heart, Book 6

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continuation of series.

The Characters:

Viktor “Zar” Prakenskii: Oldest Prakenskii brother, head of Torpedo Ink
Blythe Daniels: The heart of the Sisters and another large family that she is about to meet.

The Story:

I’m feeling lazy and not in the mood to write a full summary, with that said this book is dark! Lots of child moslestation, other deep fears and violence. There is also plenty of sexy times, some humor and the beginning of a family being built. (Maybe growing would be a better word.)

The narrator did a wonderful job. Lots a voices in this one and she nailed them all.

The Chosen
The Chosen: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood - J.R. Ward, Jim Frangione, Random House Audio
Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 15

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continuation of an awesome series

The Characters:

Layla: Former Chosen, new Mahaman
Xcor: Reformed Bastard
Qhuinn: Brother, Protector, Asshole first class.
Blay: A good male trying to make sense of a very complicated family

This book also focuses on V, Trez and Terese

The Story:

I have to start with throughout 92% of this book I wanted to punch Qhuinn right in his nose. He’s never been the easiest male but the way he treated not only Layla but baby Lyric was inexcusable. With that being said, so freaking much went on with this book. (view spoiler) I just can’t with making a summary that makes any sense or does the book any bit of justice. I can’t wait for the next book.

The McCullagh Inn in Maine
The McCullagh Inn in Maine - Erin Bennett, Jen McLaughlin, James Patterson - foreword
I Picked Up This Book Because: Wanted a quick listen while waiting for my next audiobook to be available at the library

The Characters:

Chelsea O’Kane: A woman who is really good at running from her past. First she runs from her home in Maine to Florida then she runs right back after life there became a mess.
Jeremy Holland: Former best friend who never got over his real first love.

The Story:

This book reaches out and grabs you from the first sentence. A stolen car with a gun on the passenger seat! What is going on?!? But it quickly devolves into a more predictable tale. Second chance love, revenge from “the cartels and a HEA (which I wanted). Overall it was just an okay story.

Rock Redemption
Rock Redemption (Rock Kiss) (Volume 3) - Nalini Singh
Rock Kiss, Book 3

I Picked Up This Book Because: I fell in love quickly with this series and Nalini Singh’s writing.

The Characters:

Katherine “Kit” Devigny:
Noah St. John :

The Story:

Kit is way too good for Noah and I honestly can’t sit and listen to her be in love with him while he uses her to be his friend. I am sure there is an amazing story here but I don’t have the patience to get there.

My Not So Perfect Life
My Not So Perfect Life - Sophie Kinsella

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’ve been a fan of Sophie Kinsella’s work for years. I pick up everything she puts out.

The Characters:

Katie Brenner:

The Story:

I am practically in tears as I type this. Katie has bored me into DNF-ing this book. I’ve never DNF’d a Sophie Kinsella book. I can usually slog through and find the good in even my least favorite book (looking at you Twenties Girl). Considering I found Finding Audrey to be one of the best books I read in 2016 I’m really disappointed that I could not move any further in this book. Seriously I was cleaning to avoid reading it. Oh well, it won’t stop me from picking up the next book published by Ms Kinsella.

The Saint - Tiffany Reisz

The Original Sinners: White Years, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I have previously enjoyed Tiffany Reisz’s writing.

The Characters:

Eleanor “Nora” Sutherlin:

The Story:

At this point I can’t even remember. I first picked this book up in January, it is now May and every time I’ve attempted to pick it back up I put it right back down. I want to like it but I just can’t get into it. It makes me sad.

How to be a BAWSE: A Guide to Conquering Life
How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life - Lilly Singh
I Picked Up This Book Because: Who doesn’t want to be a BAWSE? Seriously it’s time to work on the things I know I can do in life.

The Story:

I finished this audiobook at about 5:30 by 7:15 I had ordered the hardcover from Amazon.

Lilly is so inspiring and positive. I honestly hadn’t really heard of her before her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon but once I heard her talking about the book she wrote I was intrigued. I was so happy when my library had the audiobook. I’ll be honest this kind of book is best listened to for me. As I listened and was inspired I am feeling more confident in 2017 being a year of change for me. I’ve had so many conversations with close friends and family about a lot of the concepts Lilly talks about. She has taken some ideas and expanded them to places I didn’t even think of. I’m anxious to get the hard copy and start applying some concepts to real life. Thank goodness for amazon prime.

The Beast
The Beast (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series) - J.R. Ward

Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 12

I Picked Up This Book Because: BDB is one of my favorite series. How I managed to skip this book confuses and astounds me.

The Characters:

Rhage:
Mary:
Bitty:

The rest of the Brotherhood their mates and other members of the family.

The Story:

I had quite the emotional ride with this one. Though I bet that would be true with any JR Ward book I read. Watching Rhage and Mary form a family. The new chapter start in Layla’s life. It all had me so enraptured. I am unsettled that Xcor seems to get forgotten. However I don’t like his character so it wasn’t much skin off my nose. Also Assail had a lot more page time that I would have cared for BUT I’m curious about his new role and even coming to like him a bit.

One Less Problem Without You
One Less Problem Without You: A Novel - Orlagh Cassidy, Beth Harbison
I Picked Up This Book Because: I love Beth Harbison’s writing.

The Characters:

Chelsea: Up and coming actress
Diana Tiesman: Wife of Leif Tiesman who has had enough
Prinny Tiesman: Half sister of Leif Tiesman (IDK why the book constantly calls her a step sister they have the same father)

The Story:

These three women have exactly one thing in common, Leif Tiesman, the asshole who is trying to systematically ruin their lives. They ban together and don’t let him. That’s all I can say without revealing too much of the story. It is not overt and it is not a full fledged march for women’s rights but they get it. They go through a lot but they get it.

My Life, My Love, My Legacy
My Life, My Love, My Legacy - Coretta Scott King, Barbara Reynolds, January LaVoy, Phylicia Rashad, Macmillan Audio
I Picked Up This Book Because: Curiosity. Because of who her husband was, who her family was had to make her life different.

The story of Coretta Scott King’s life from a small girl in nowhere U.S.A to the wife of one of the most significant civil rights leaders in the world. It is told in depth and unabashedly.

The audiobook has two narrators, the only reason I can think as to why is to show some significance from before and after Martin’s death. The first narrator I found charismatic and easy to listen to. The second narrator was not bad but her tone of voice made me want to go to sleep. Also her material got old quick. There was a lot of blame game happening and while I know being blocked and knocked down at every turn is a major part of the struggle I felt like it got to be too much of he did she did.

Overall I found the book thought provoking. I don’t think I could have done it if I were in Mrs King’s shoes. The constant worry for you husband’s life, the life and well being of your children. Then raising four children alone. She was such a strong woman.

The Characters:

Clara Morgan Petite dynamo, resort rebranding genius, stubbornly self sufficient
Archie Bryant: Resort owner, stalwart widower, caring companion

Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race - Margot Lee Shetterly, Robin Miles

I Picked Up This Book Because: After seeing the movie, which was excellent, I was interested in hearing more of the stories behind these ladies. As we all know the movie only scratches the surface.

The Story:

I picked this up because I wanted to know more but man I didn’t realize I’d learn so much more. While the movie concentrates on three women the book introduces us to many more. While I found the story of how Dorothy, Mary and Katherine came to work at Langley very interesting I will admit that I found some of the more technical aspects of their jobs boring.

The unexpected to me is how much I learned about my home state. These events took place not 2 hours from where I grew up and I had NO idea. Not about the base being so a front runner in aerodynamic technology or being such a frontrunner in the space race. Obviously I need to get out and absorb more local history.

There is so much more I could say, so much more that I learned. This is one of those books you feel like you should read, or listen to as I did, a second time. There was so much to take in I want to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

The Random Thoughts:

This book wins the award for longest epilogue.

The Steel Kiss
The Steel Kiss (A Lincoln Rhyme Novel) - Jeffery Deaver
Lincoln Rhyme, Book 12

I Picked Up This Book Because: 1) NOOK had this as their free serial read for March and I’ve always wanted to participate. B) I needed a book that counted a “a bestseller from genre I don’t usually read” and “a book with multiple perspectives” for my “PopSugar Ultimate Books” Challenge and “2017 Book Bingo”

The Characters:

Amelia Sachs Former model come NYPD detective.

Lincoln Rhyme: Criminologist extraordinaire and all around braniac.

The Story:

I’m a little said I didn’t get in on the first floor of this series. It’s great. The writing is captivating. Nothing was predictable. The characters were interesting and multifaceted. I really have no complaints about it at all. I can’t begin to summarize. The story had so many layers, so many connections and twist I won’t do it justice at all.

I’ll leave it at I enjoyed every single bit and I’m definitely willing to read more of this series.

The Random Thoughts:

I couldn’t stand the wait after chapter 53 and ended up borrowing the book from my library’s digital service at 11 p.m. so I could finish.

Replica
Replica - Lauren Oliver
Replica, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’ve always been intrigued by Miss Oliver’s books, this is just the first one I’ve had a chance to pick up.

The Characters:

Lyra: A girl raised in a lab for unknown purposes, taught to believe that she is less than human.
Gemma: A girl raised by her parents as a delicate flower due to childhood and on going illnesses.

The Story:

Gemma and Lyra meet because the lab where Lyra was raised, Haven, is pretty much attacked. The why is kind of sketchy but I feel like as the story unfolds in future books we will learn more about it. So much goes on in this book, told first in Lyra’s POV then in Gemma’s that I can not give a quick summary. It was good and a bit crazy and a little scary. The story ends in a way that makes it leaves it wide open to go anywhere. I’m very ready for the next book.

The Random Thoughts:

Gemma’s obsession with her weight is irksome. Especially because in my mind she is probably a size 10 or 12 and really not as big as she has been lead to believe.
