Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes.  Read With Me

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Book 5 - J.K. Rowling, Jim Dale

Harry Potter, Book 5

Re-Read:
January 29 - February 5

These stories do not grow stale with age. Seriously they are still amazing. Jim Dale’s narration is so good. I can already see myself doing another reread.

Summoned to Thirteenth Grave
Summoned To Thirteenth Grave - Darynda Jones

Charlie Davidson, Book 13

Re-Read:
February 5 - February 12

This book broke my heart all over again. It’s so hard saying goodbye to these characters. It’s so strange that these books and characters have been a part of my life for many years however the timeline of the series is maybe 2 years long. I already miss Charlie and crew but I’m looking forward to more from this wonderful author.

Black Girls Must Die Exhausted
Black Girls Must Die Exhausted - Jayne Allen

I Picked Up This Book Because: The title

The Characters:

Tabitha Walker:
Granma Tabitha, Marc, Laila, Alexis

The Story:

I.Am.Bored. I have been bored since I started this book back in February. It’s not that the writing is bad it’s just slow. Nothing is happening and when something does happen we have to dwell on it and repeat it a thousand times before we can move on. I can’t stay invested in Tabitha’s journey. I did skip to the end and read the last chapter and the epilogue and I feel like Tab got a peaceful ending if not a traditional HEA and I’m okay knowing just that.

I do feel bad for DNF-ing this book because I wanted to love it but my love stopped at the front cover. Seriously it’s beautiful and I’d hang it on my wall.

The Umbrella Academy, Vol. 1: Apocalypse Suite - Gerard Way, Gabriel Bá

Umbrella Academy, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: My love for the show inspired me to try reading the graphic novel

The Story:

I have always known graphic novels are not my thing however I have this a chance based on my love of the subject. However,  I felt like the story was disjointed and since I read it digitally there are a lot of frames and words I can’t even see. It proved to be more struggle than I signed up for.

This book is still excellent despite this being my third time reading it. I fall in love with Jamie and Wes every time. I’ve even been inspired to reread Us. This time.

One for the Money
One for the Money - Janet Evanovich

Stephanie Plum, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: Has been sitting on my TBR for a long time

The Characters:

Stephanie Plum:
Joe Morelli:
Ramirez, Jimmy Alpha, Vinny Plum(cousin), Connie (Vinny’s receptionist), Ranger (Stephanie’s Higgins)

The Story:

Stephanie’s tendency to give everyone her full name and her blazè about Ramirez concern me but overall I enjoyed this book. As I was listening to the abridged edition it got right into the story without lengthy set up.

Out of necessity Stephanie signs on with her cousin as a bounty hunter. She’s going after the big bucks Joe Morelli. She and Joe have a bit of a history, that include her running him down with a buick. (ha!) Joe actually turns out to be a help of course he must prove his innocence before he lets Stephanie bring him in.

This book was action packed, a little suspenseful and overall a good story. I’m ready for book two.

The Random Thoughts:

I totally don't see Kathrine Heigl as Stephanie Plum.

Heaven
Heaven - Angela Johnson, John Jude Palencar

Heaven, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: Picked up from the library for a Black History Month Readathon.

The Characters:

Marley:
Moms, Pops, Butchy, Uncle Jack

The Story:

I didn’t understand what was going on in this book, so much so that I skipped from page 86 to the last chapter in the book. It’s full of I guess poetic prose but to me it’s full of half thoughts and half stories. I prefer my writing more straight forward.

From what I gather, Marly is a young lady living in the town of Heaven. Through a happenstance she finds out her world isn’t really what she thought it was. (view spoiler) Marley understandably has a lot of emotions about this. In the end she seems to come to peace with her past and is looking forward to the future.

Just the Funny Parts: … and a Few Hard Truths about Sneaking Into the Hollywood Boy’s Club
Just the Funny Parts: ... And a Few Hard Truths About Sneaking Into the Hollywood Boys' Club - Nell Scovell

I Picked Up This Book Because: Someone close to me aspires to be a TV writer so I thought I’d see what she was signing up for.

The Story:

Part memoir, part advice column, part real facts about Hollywood Nell takes us on a recounting of her career from “Who is Nell Scovell” to “Who is Nell Scovell”. This book is well written and pulls not punches about the sexism, racism and other flaws of a career in Hollywood. Nell had a lot to say on the subject. Sometime a bit too much. At the end when she was listing unused jokes I felt like it was more filler than anything useful. All together it was eye opening. I had no idea how short a writer's career could be. It’s definitely not a field for the faint of heart.

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the Series

Marion Praft: Genius Polymaker, son of the founder of Praft School of Magic
Bennet Cooper:Future folder, devoted brother, paramore.

A great new adventure. While Alvie doesn’t seem to find trouble the way Ceony does she’s definitely up for the challenge when she does. Alvie is smart and talented and I hope we get to see more of her.

My Mother Was Nuts
My Mother Was Nuts: A Memoir - Penny Marshall, Penny Marshall, Brilliance Audio

I Picked Up This Book Because: Exploring the kindle unlimited library

The Story:

Penny is very open and honest with her memories. She speaks of growing up and her career. She’s had an amazing life. There are many movies and organizations I had no idea she was a part of. Her dedication to New York City after 9/11 was moving. I really enjoyed listening.

The Random Thoughts:

Penny knows everybody in Hollywood.

The Master Magician
The Master Magician (The Paper Magician Book 3) - Charlie Holmberg

The Paper Magician, Book 3

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the Series

The Characters:

Ceony Twill:
Emery Thane:

The Story:

Can you believe Ceony has managed to stay out of trouble for almost two years? She is all set to take her test to graduate her apprenticeship when Saraj (an excisioner whose name I am probably spelling wrong, I apologize I’ve only heard #AudiobookProblems) escapes from prison. Fearing Saraj will attack her family or Emery and Ceony being Ceony, she puts a plan into action to track him down. When she does find him she miscalculates and clues him in on her biggest secret, (view spoiler) Of course now Ceony is in another huge heap of trouble.

I’m so glad I stumbled upon this series. It has been so much fun.

I Picked Up This Book Because: Exploring the Kindle Unlimited Library

The Characters:

Nova Lane:
Kessler Rocha:
Hunter Rocha

The Story:

I hate to bail but I just don’t connect with these characters. Plus there are passages that are supposed to be funny but just feel like it’s trying too hard. That’s a real turn off for me. I hope Nova and Kessler get it together but I won’t be around for the journey.

I’m going to miss little Hunter, he was my favorite character… or maybe it was the chicken. ;-)

Jar of Hearts
Jar of Hearts - Jennifer Hillier

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’m not even sure anymore.

The Characters:

Georgina “Geo” Shaw:
Angela Wong:
Kaiser Brody:
Calvin James:

The Story:

I don’t even know how to begin describing this book. There are so many characters and so many secrets and a “wow” of a finale.

I can say I was probably deep into the third part (out of five) before the book made me want to pick it up. I was absolutely hooked for the last five chapters. The book is told in alternating time between the present and flashbacks to high school. Also told in alternate POV between Geo and Kaiser. I must say I liked Kaisers part better. Geo’s is filled with some rough situations, jail, rape, murder, more rape, more murder. It can be a lot.

Overall it’s an interesting book. Very well thought out and executed.

The Varlet and the Voyeur
The Varlet and the Voyeur - L.H. Cosway

Rugby, Book 4

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

William “Will” Moore:
Josey Kavanagh:
Elish, Brian

The Story:

I liked Will even though he seemed uncompromising at times. I liked Josey, she is very much a free spirit but she and Will seem like Yin and Yang so they blend together well. Both suffered the dreaded communication issue, their self imposed rules keeping them from each other. Oh and then there’s the matter of Will’s public scandal. It really was a shame because Will is a very stand up guy. I’m glad he found Josey, I think he loved her from his first meeting with her.

The Glass Magician - Charlie N. Holmberg

The Paper Magician, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Ceony Twill:
Emery Thane:
Delilah, Magician Aviosky

The Story:

This book picks up where The Glass Magician left off. Ceony seems to be a magnet for danger. This time she has attracted the attention of Layla’s partner Graft. (He has a first name I just can’t remember it) Graft wants Ceony to restore Layla and he has a big secret of his own (view spoiler) Graft threatens everyone Ceony loves so of course she takes it upon herself to stop him. Graft prove to be a wiley foe.

I really liked this book and I’m glad I had the next installment handy to continue the series.
