Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes.  Read With Me

Harry Potter, Book 3

Re-Read:
July 14 - July 18

These books are just so incredible. I don’t think there is anymore I can say about them. While I love the movies these books go so much deeper have so many more stories. I am really enjoying re-discovering them through the audiobooks.

Crazy Rich Asians
Crazy Rich Asians - Kevin Kwan

Crazy Rich Asians, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I became aware of the book after seeing the movie trailer.

The Characters:

Nick, Rachel, Aramenta, Colin, Astrid, Parents, Aunties, Uncles, Other Friends and Cousins, A Porn Star and I think some digintaries

Seriously there were several thousand characters in this book. It’s crazy. (see what I did there)

The Story:

This read started out a little slow for me. The part of the book where you are meeting new characters kind of overshadows where the story is going. However once we cross that bridge the book becomes much more interesting. I loved Rachel and Nick, even if I hated Nick’s family and family friends treatment of Rachel. These ladies that used their bible study time as basically gossip and plot time tickle me.

The lavish lives these characters live are amazing and I think I would quite enjoy the next story in the series.

Killman Creek
Killman Creek - Rachel Caine

Stillhouse Lake, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

The Characters:

Gwen Procter formerly Gina Royal:
Sam Cade:
Lanny/Lily, Connor/Brady, Mike Lustig, Melvin Royal, Javier, Kezia

The Story:

Gwen Procter and Same Cade take us on one hell of a man hunt. Their only objective, find and kill escaped serial killer Melvin Royal. The police have failed to find him and Gwen needs him gone for her family to be safe.

When I say everything happened in this book, I mean EVERYTHING happened in this book. Multiple kidnappings, a car chase in treacherous icy weather and several other federal offenses. I was on the hook of it all. I will admit it took me waaayyyy too long to read this book. A combination of not working my part time job (where I spend a great deal of time reading), laziness and my yearly re-watch of a certain long running, Seattle based, medical drama being some of my reasons for not cranking out the pages. My other major reason is this book is seriously creepy sometimes and it’s not the kind of thing I can read then go to sleep on.

Often I compared the first book to a Lifetime movie and the second book is no different. If you are looking for a crazy suspense/thriller this is your book.

Just a Guy: Notes from a Blue Collar Life
Just a Guy: Notes from a Blue Collar Life - Bill Engvall, Alan Eisenstock

I Picked Up This Book Because: Curiosity.

The Story:

Bill seems to be the definition of an all american guy. He grew up in a great time when kids went out to play and tv and movies were a treat. He had his bumps and bruises along the way, both literally and figuratively. I enjoyed hearing his story. From the time in the little league dugout to the frat parties to the beginning of his family.

Losing It
Losing It - Cora Carmack
The Characters

I love Bliss Edwards. She is so much like me, despite our ten year age difference.

Garrick Taylor is a wonderful, loveable guy.

Beyond Bliss and Garrick we have a large cast of characters and she did a great job of not overwhelming the reader with them.

The Story

A very sweet and entertaining story. I like Ms Carmack’s style. It’s humorous, which I love. The characters are so enjoyable and I really felt a connection with them.

The Random Thoughts

The only thing I didn’t care for it is the narrator. Not that she didn’t do an excellent job bringing the characters to life but her voice was a bit “young” for the character. Bliss sounded like a 16 year old ready to get her license not a twenty two year old living college life.

Wolfishly Yours
Wolfishly Yours - Lydia Dare
The Characters:

Grayson Hadley
Liviana Mayeux

The Story:

Great story. Lady or not I really like Liviana. Her “wild” upbringing gave her the skills she needed to keep Gray in line.

The Random Thoughts:

Why didn’t Archer and Lady Sophie ever get a book? While we’re at it I’d like to see the Mayeux brothers get roped too.

Changing the Game
Changing The Game - Jaci Burton
The Characters:

Elizabeth Darnell
Gavin Riley

The Story:

I really enjoyed this story and I’m glad I didn’t follow my first thoughts of quitting listening to it. I did not consider quitting because of the writing but because of the narrator. While she didn't do a bad job I sometimes she ran everything together and some of her pronunciations took me out of the story. I prefer to be able to lose myself in the characters. Anyhooo I enjoyed further getting to know the Riley family. I’m reading/listening to this very out of order so it’s been and it has experience going back to the “before” if you will for some characters.

Gavin and Elizabeth have rocking chemistry. I like how they are connected before starting a relationship. I still don’t know why Gavin was so moody blues in the beginning but it all worked out so we’ll just overlook that.

I don't know what to say other than I enjoyed the book and I impatiently await the next installment.

Posession
Possession - J.R. Ward
The Characters

So the cast is pretty full this time around. We have our old usuals Jim, Adrian, Eddie (kinda) and lets not forget Davina. But we are also finally introduced to and get a chance to know Sissy. (view spoiler)

Also we have our soul and the soul's supporting cast, Duke Phillips, Cait Douglass (haven’t we seen this last name before in a Ward book?) and G.B. (Gordon Benjamin).

The Story

A lot of buildup to this story. A lot, a lot. And though I was semi-surprised with the ending I wasn’t wowed. In fact part of the ending, the attack on Cait, was actually quite predictable.

I like that the war is moving along. I more or less enjoyed the guessing game about who the soul is. I like that I was wrong about it.

The Random Thoughts

Not my favorite of the series but I’m glad I experienced it.

Nightshade
Nightshade: Die Wächter - Andrea Cremer
The Characters

Calla Tor
Renier “Ren” Laroche
Seamus “Shay” Doran

The Story

I found this book to be equal parts intriguing and annoying.

The Intriguing:
- WTF is going on? The whole mystery of the Searcher/Keepers is what I want to know more about. I’m dying for them to uncover the truth.
- What exactly is Shay (a.k.a. The Scion)? Why is he so important?

The Annoying:
- The love triangle between Calla, Ren and Shay. I understand that they are young and hormones are raging but we could have saved 25 pages by not talking about it so much.
- The double EFFING standards! “Oh, Ren’s a young alpha male it’s natural for him to go out with other girls and want sex but NO Calla you can’t dare have desire too.” I’m paraphrasing, but you get the gist. They can take that crap and shove it.

Overall I liked the book. I think it some pages could have been edited out and some opponents (looking at you huge spider) could have been left out altogether. But I’m intrigued enough to go on to the next book.

Bad Men and Wicked Women
Bad Men and Wicked Women - Eric Jerome Dickey

I Picked Up This Book Because: It’s been a long time since I picked up and EJD book and the cover to this one was irresistible.

The Characters:

Ken Swift:
Jake Ellis, Margaux, several other characters whose importance to the storyline I could not determine

The Story:

This book did more annoying me than entertaining me so I had to call it quits. I wanted to find out what was going on with Margaux, I really did, but I couldn’t take all the stalling. The political rants were distracting. The narrator's incessant yelling as JakeEllis and whispering as one of the female characters grated on my nerves. The fight with KenSwift’s so called girlfriend was the last straw. Really, KenSwift get over the bullshit with the ex. Man up or move on. Oh and I type everyone’s name as one word on purpose because whenever a name is called (except Margaux) it’s said first and last all together, which was just strange.

I would love to find out the conclusion of this book because I think the mystery of Margaux was interesting however I need the cliff notes version.

Loved - Kristin Cast, P.C. Cast

House of Night Other World, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I am a fan of the original HON series.

The Characters:

Zoey Redbird:
The Nerd Herd:
Grandma Redbird, Other Jack and Other Kevin

The Story:

The Good: The Nerd Herd is back! After being spread all across America everyone is back to celebrate Zoey’s 18th Birthday

The Bad: So is Nefert, or maybe it’s just her influence. The White Bull starts some drama that ends up opening a portal to another world. A world where Neferet’s crazy plan to dominate humankind has worked.

The Unbelievable: I know Zoey has a special connection with the goddess Nix but to believe that a teenager and her teenage friends are the people solely capable to lead an entire species… seems a little too much to me. But I rolled with it.

Overall: I liked the concept of another world. I like how they helped the red fledglings and vampires from that world and I see that developing a lot in the future. I do think there was a fair amount of fluff that was unnecessary. I am looking forward to the next installment but will not go through great pains to

Can’t Let Go
Can't Let Go - Gena Showalter

The Original Heartbreakers, Book 5

I Picked Up This Book Because: I like the author.

The Characters:

Ryanne Wade:
Jude Laurent:
Brock, Lindy, Dorothea and Daniel

The Story:

I enjoyed Jude and Ryanne’s story even though their alternate stubbornness got on my nerves sometimes. Jude’s constant battle to not continue to live and constantly push Ryanne away irked me. Ryanne is a better woman than me. I wouldn’t have given him so many chances. Then again, I don’t want him the way Ryanne does. Her fierceness will keep him in line for years to come.

The Random Thoughts:

I love that the video games Ryanne loves so much are named after other Gena Showalter book series and that the kitties are named after the Lords of the Underworld.
