Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes.  Read With Me

The Path Made Clear: Discovering Your Life’s Direction and Purpose
The Path Made Clear: Discovering Your Life's Direction and Purpose - Oprah Winfrey
I Picked Up This Book Because: Oprah

The Story:

Nothing is clear and nothing has been discovered. I fault myself I should have paid more attention to how this book was presented before I began listening. It’s a personal think that I don’t like when information is presented to me piecemeal. I feel like I need full conversations to make the connections and learn what is actually being spoken about. This book is just a lot of quotes from conversations/interviews that Oprah has done. Yes there were some inspiring tidbits but a lot of it was cliche. And I know cliches are cliches for a reason but I did not feel inspired by most of them. There was one quote by Gary Zukov that gained my attention, something to the effect of whatever you put out into the universe you will receive back from the universe. Again not new but it hit me in a place of thought.

With all that being said, did I get much out of the book? No. Do I think other people will? Yes. I have recommended this book to my cousin before I even got though chapter 4. I know this is her type of reading.

Dreams from my Father
Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance - Barack Obama
I Picked Up This Book Because: Curiosity? I think mostly I wanted to get to know Michelle’s other half.

Mr Obama has had a varied and well traveled life. He has experienced many cultures and taken advantage of the knowledge gained. While I feel like I learned a lot about his past I don’t feel like this book changed the way I see him. It was personal without being personal. I know that makes no sense but that’s the best way I can describe it.

Seven Up
Seven Up - Janet Evanovich
Stephanie Plum, Book 7

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

The Characters:

Stephanie Plum:
Joe Marelli:
Ranger, Lula, Grandma Mazur

The Story:

Another day in the life for our bumbling bounty hunter. Stephanie is called to capture Eddie DeChooch a semi retired criminal and of course things are never what they seem on the surface. We follow Stephanie though the random turns that unfold and yet another car is destroyed.

I’m glad to see that the amount of people who break into her apartment is finally starting to bother her.

These books are not terrible original from one to the other but I still love them. Stephanie and her antics haven’t failed to entertain me yet.

The Random Thoughts:

I know this wasn’t an issue or talked about issue when this book was written but the casual racism/sexism/homophobia in this series bothers me. Not enough to make me stop reading because I do like the characters for the most part but enough that I feel a jolt when it happens.

Though I love Lorelei King I’m not in love with her as the voice of Stephanie. I much preferred the hard edged voice of the first narrator I listened to.

LIfe WIll be the Deah of Me... and You Too!
Life Will Be the Death of Me - Chelsea Handler
I Picked Up This Book Because: I love Chelsea.

I’ve always thought Chelsea was an open book when it came to her writing but this book take open, honest and vulnerable to new levels for her. This book follows a year of therapy and explores her losses in life. Her personality, the shortcomings that come with that and her need and ability to overcome these challenges.

This book was deeply personal on another level for Chelsea. I admire her for putting it all out there. It’s not always pretty but I’m glad to see how open and honest she is about this journey. It has inspired me.

Meet Cute
Meet Cute - Helena Hunting

I Picked Up This Book Because: They hype. Apparently that is my thing in 2019.

The Characters:

Kailyn Flowers:
Daxton Hughes:
Emme Hughes, Aunt Linda

The Story:

Took me a long time to get this book read mostly because of the incredibly long wait at the library and a slow start. I wasn’t in the mood to meet new characters but once I got to know Dax, Kailyn and Emme I found them to be the cutest. Daxton and Kailyn were well matched and Dax’s cluelessness when it comes to teenage girls was adorable. I’m glad he and Emme had Kailyn to help him through this tough transition. I found Aunt Linda to be a good character you can love to hate. She was suspect from her entry into the story.

While this story was not new or revolutionary I quite enjoyed it. The characters were loveable with palpable chemistry and exceptional familial bonds.

Fix Her Up
Fix Her Up: A Novel - Tessa Bailey
Hot and Hammered , Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: Random selection from Hoopla Digital TBR.

The Characters:

Travis Ford:
Georgette “Georgie” Castle:
Georgie’s Brother, sister-in-law, sister, and a few friends

The Story:

I was skeptical to start this book. It’s a trope I love but I had seen it described as “laugh out loud” funny and in my recent experience I have not found such books amusing at all. Not the case with Fix Her Up. Georgie is sassy and fun and wildly in love with Travis since she was a little girl. Travis is Georgie’s brother’s best friend and fresh off of a baseball injury that has ended his career. After Georgie kicks his butt into gear they enter into an agreement designed to change his public image and convince her family that she is more than just the baby of the family.

Travis never expects to fall in love and Georgie tries her best to kick him out of her heart. Their relationship is a sexy and fun whirlwind. I really enjoyed it. My only complaint was her nickname being baby girl. Too many fathers I know use that term for their daughters so it seemed especially nasty during sex scene, which were otherwise smoking fire.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Book 7 - J.K. Rowling, Jim Dale

Harry Potter, Book 7

Re-Read:
June 17 - June 26 2019

I finished listening to this book today, the last in the series on the anniversary of the first book being published. Something about the merge of beginning and ending feels so special to me. Re-exploring this series through audiobook has been a wonderful ride and one I’m sure I will take again. These books lose no wonder, joy, amazement, sadness, astonishment or magic over the years.

The Deathly Hallows is the book in the series I am least familiar with as I have only read it once before this so the surprises were truly surprising. The joy and sorrow I felt was so familiar but still somehow new. Harry, Ron and Hermoine’s sacrifices, the determination of those against Voldermort and the valor shown resonate deeply throughout the book. I feel a small whole in my heart now that it is over.

Everything is F*cked: A Book About Hope
Everything is F*cked - Mark Manson

So I’m going to blame it on my mood. This book is not holding my attention at all. I’m finding my mind wandering or listening to music instead of the book. I even listened to the radio the other day. So I think it’s safe to go ahead and call this a DNF

Cinder & Ella
Cinder & Ella - Kelly Oram

Cinder & Ella , Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: Random library find

The Characters:

Ellamara Rodriguez:
Brian “Cinder” Oliver:
Juliette, Vivian, Anastasia, Rob, Mr & Mrs Coleman

The Story:

I smiled throughout most of this book, with breaks for outrage and tears. I love Brian and Ella’s relationship, even before they met. I love their banter and how much they care for each other. I enjoyed the growth of the sisterhood between Juliette and Ella, that was a hard won battle. Elle’s like if almost all hard one battles and she has her ups and downs.

I enjoyed this book very much, if I had the next book I’d pick it up right now.

The Random Thoughts:

I’m quite disappointed that my library does not have the next installment. :-(

The Bride Test
The Bride Test - Helen Hoang

The Kiss Quotient, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Kahi Diep:
Esme Tran:

The Story:

I enjoyed Khai and Esme’s story very much. It opened very somberly and it took me a while to make the connection back to The Kiss Quotient but it was fun after that. It’s so good to get to know adult Khai as we only get a glimpse of him in TKQ. You can tell he has a family who loves him very much and his mom is outstanding.

The Kiss Quotient
The Kiss Quotient - Helen Hoang
The Kiss Quotient, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Stella Lane:
Michael Phan (Lawson):

The Story:

Stella might be one of my favorite heroines of the year. Fiercely independent, stubborn as all get out, and genuinely kind and giving to those she loves. Michael is an exceptional man who would do anything for his family and his only real flaw is his name is Michael (sorry my ex’s name so it made it difficult to fall in love with him)

Overall this was quite an enjoyable read. Stella and Michael are a good couple who need to work on their communication. *insert smile here*

The Proposal
The Proposal - Jasmine Guillory

The Wedding Date, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Carlos Ibarrra:
Nicole “Nic” Peterson:
Angela “Angie”, Jesse, Drew and Alexa, Courtney, Dana

The Story:

I really love the meet cute that starts this book off. Nic is at a Dodgers game with her boyfriend Fischer having a terrible time when all of a sudden Fisher proposes on the jumbotron. Carlos and his sister Angie step in to rescue Nic after a crushing rejection and impending further embarrassment. Nic and Carlos’s relationship builds from there. I liked the fact that Nic was the commitment shy one in the relationship. I loved the friendship between Nik, Courtney and Dana. And I loved the side story of Natalie’s Gym and all the positive vibes that came from such a terrible situation.

Looking back I should have read the book and not listened to the audio. The narrator wasn’t bad but she did detract from my enjoyment of the story. But overall I really enjoyed it and am glad I don’t have to wait long for the next book.

The Wedding Date
The Wedding Date - Jasmine Guillory

The Wedding Date, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: Following the hype

The Characters:

Alexa Monroe:
Drew Nicols:
Carlos

The Story:

I love Drew and Alexa together. IDC what Drew thought though most of the book there was no way he was going to make it without her. I loved their meeting in the elevator, it was too cute. I did wish Alexa had more confidence in herself and Drew’s attraction to her but not fitting into the cookie cutter image in LA can be tough oh the most confident women at first. Anyhooo I loved this couple together and routed for them during their ups and downs. Very entertaining read.
