Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes.  Read With Me

Kulti
Kulti - Mariana Zapata, Callie Dalton

I Picked Up This Book Because: Virtual Book Club pick for November

The Characters:

Sal Casillas:
Reiner Kulti:

The Story:

I can not get coherent thoughts together on this book. It was all so good. I love the friendship that develops between Rey and Sal or should I say Bratwurst and Taco.

I’m taking it bare bones because I’m just so in love with this story and I don’t want to babble.

Writing: Excellent. This one doesn’t hit the ground running but builds slowly and naturally. Sal and Rey have a bit of a love/hate thing going on in the beginning, then it builds into a friendship, then a relationship. I love the way it all comes together in the end.
Forward Motion: Mostly good. The author seems to be a fan of dropping hints or telling part of a story then holding the rest for later in the book.
Overall Interest: I was completely hooked.
Length of Reading Time: I thought 16+ hours of listening was going to be a lot, turns out it was not enough. I think 7 days is an admirable amount of time for me.
Re-read-ability: It could happen.

Protecting Their Mate: Part One (New Bundle)
Protecting Their Mate: Part One (The Last Pack) - Kit Rocha, Moira Rogers, Mia Thorne

  The Last Pack, Book 1.2-1.3

I Picked Up This Book Because: continuing the series

The Characters:

Ashley Todd:
Blake:

The Story:

I read the first part of this series as a kindle freebie that I got… who knows how long ago. The series has since been rebundled into 3 parts instead of 8 so this review is for the two parts after the original part one. Man that sounds confusing.

This series is something I should probably stop reading on my computer at work. If someone saw these scenes….. *insert grimace emoji here* It’s burning up my screen for sure. I’m very interested in the relationship developing between Ashley and Blake. And I seriously hope they find Dani, I feel like she might be Lucas’ mate.

Protecting Their Mate: Part One
Protecting Their Mate, Part One: A BBW Shifter Werewolf Romance (The Last Pack) - Mia Thorne

  The Last Pack, Book 1.1

I Picked Up This Book Because: Kindle freebie + I wanted something short to read at work

The Characters:

Ashley Todd:
Blake:
:

The Story:

Why the hell don’t I have the rest of this series lined up to read?????

Usually a #WorkRead is something I read while waiting for files to save or download or other such non active work. This one here through? I had to make myself flip the screen or barter with myself “if you post an invoice you can read a page”. Ashley and Blake burn up the page and I’m super intrigued about the dynamic of this pack. How is she going to choose? I cut books out of the budget for the rest of the year but obviously that needs to change.

Writing: Good
Forward Motion: Great
Overall Interest: Glued to the screen
Length of Reading Time: Went by too fast
Re-read-ability: Maybe but probably not

Forward Motion: Ughhhhh
Overall Interest: I was riveted because I was horrified. Well maybe not horrified but this was a trainwreck

For 100 Reasons
For 100 Reasons - Lara Adrian, Summer Morton, Alexander Cendese
100 Series, Book 3

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Dominic “Nick” Baine:
Avery Ross:

The Story:

I didn’t think their drama could get any deeper and man should Nick thank his lucky stars that Avery loves him. She should have walked away several times. If I had to pick a theme for this book it would be forgiveness because a lot of it goes on. New hurts, old wounds and all the scrapes and bruises in between.

I know when this series was originally planned it was going to be a trilogy but I wonder in the following years has Ms Adrian changed her mind or thought about expanding it. I would love to follow Nick and Avery in their next steps. I think the chances are slim though because we got a great ending to the trilogy and I’m happy to have read it all.

Writing: Very good.
Forward Motion: Perfect. I never felt a lull. (Lulls and filler are the worst)
Overall Interest: I was riveted
Length of Reading Time: Average
Re-read-ability: probably not

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Emeline Sanchez:
Dragomir:
Tons of other warriors plus Tariq’s children:

The Story:

I’m short on time so this is stupid short but I liked the book. I was so into it I didn’t even notice it was about to end. Can’t wait for the next installment

Writing: Awesome.
Forward Motion: Very Good. This can sometimes be a challenge with Ms Feehan but I didn’t notice it much in this book
Overall Interest: Very good

Obsession: Mafia Ties: Christian & Mia
Obsession: Mafia Ties: Christian & Mia - FIona Davenport, Elle Christense, Rochelle Paige

I Picked Up This Book Because: I wanted a quick read and I’ve loved previous installments of Mafia Ties

The Characters:

Mia Ricci:
Christian DeLuca:

The Story:

Well I got what I asked for, a quick read. That doesn’t mean I’m happy with it. Most of this story happens within 24 hours. Christian and Mia are in love and Christian is ready to be married before he even speaks one word to Mia. I cannot suspend reality for this but I won’t continue to complain as that would make this review longer than the book. I did enjoy the second half of the story.

Writing: Okay.
Forward Motion: Fine
Overall Interest: It was rough in the beginning
Length of Reading Time: Took longer than I wanted due to lack of interest
Re-read-ability: No.

Half Past
Half Past: A Novel - Victoria Helen Stone

I Picked Up This Book Because: The last Victoria Helen Stone book I read wrecked me in all the best ways.

The Characters:

Hannah Smith:

The Story:

I am sad to report this book did not have the same results. While well written it left me feeling blah overall. I realize now more than ever I need my characters to interact with other characters. Hannah spent a lot of time in her head. It doesn’t work for me. Once we got deep into the plot and there were other people to hash out details with I started to enjoy the story more. I didn’t agree with a lot of Hannah’s actions. I think there was much more she could have done before she flew halfway across the country but in the end I see how that does not serve the plot well. I enjoyed the mystery and the unraveling. I don’t even know what I would do if I were to find out one of my parents is not my parent. I don’t think it’s a thing you can decide on if you aren’t in that position.

Writing: Good.
Forward Motion: Great pacing. It felt natural
Overall Interest: It wavered during a lot of the beginning of the book
Length of Reading Time: Fair
Re-read-ability: No.

The Random Thoughts:

Oh and Hannah’s sisters really made me mad. I’m glad she was able to overcome though.

Kitty’s Big Trouble
Kitty's Big Trouble - Carrie Vaughn
Kitty Norville, Book 9

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continuation of a series.

The Characters:

Kitty Norville:
Ben O’Farrell:
Cormac/Amelia, Sun, Anastasia:

The Story:

This title is misleading, Kitty is always in trouble but with so much going on I see why the author kept it simple. This story was anything but simple. With monsters and relics and gods and centuries old vampires. Oh and pack members that are now magically inclined. There is an excellent setup for the next book which I look forward to getting my hands on.

Marguerite Gavin deserves a shout out because her portrayal of Kitty and company is unbeatable. I think a great amount of my love for this series is due to her.

Writing: Intricate and slightly overwhelming, like I like it.
Forward Motion: Excellent, not a moment of lull. Seriously the characters have to be exhausted.
Overall Interest: Great. I actually listened to the last 45 minutes at work this morning.
Length of Reading Time: Good
Re-read-ability: No.

The Random Thoughts:

I kinda hope we get to see Sun again. I really liked his character.

I just had a thought: Is the title related to/a play on Big Trouble in Little China? I’ve never seen the film so I am clueless.

  WAGs, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: These two authors make magic when they write together.

The Characters:

Blake Riley:
Jess Canning:

The Story:

I wasn’t ready for the end of this book. I was enjoying myself so much I didn’t even realize we were done.

Writing: Excellent.
Forward Motion: Also excellent, I do not recall any drag time.
Overall Interest: When I was in it I was in it, but I didn’t start reading at stop lights until the end (Did that make any sense?)

Death and the Girl Next Door
Death and the Girl Next Door (Darklight) - Darynda Jones, Lorelei King

Darklight, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I love this author’s Charley Davidson series and was curious about her other titles

The Characters:

Lorelei McAlister:
Cameron Lusk:
Jared Kovach:
Glitch, Brooklyn and several others

The Story:

So I admit I picked this up because I love Charley (I want to be her when I grow up) I see a lot of Charley in Lorelei. Loves her coffee. Is brave, determined, cares for others before herself. Oh and Jared is totally a Reyes Jr.

But it’s not all Charley and Reyes Jr. I enjoyed getting to know Lorelei and the gang. It’s a mysterious tale. The end was shocking and I look forward to reading the next to volumes.

Writing: Very good. Very twisty.
Overall Interest: I’m not going to lie I did zone out from time to time but I was able to pick the story back up without too much trouble.
Length of Reading Time: 5 days. Decent for me.
Re-read-ability: Don’t think I will

The Trouble with Twelfth Grave
The Trouble with Twelfth Grave - Darynda Jones

Charley Davidson, Book 12

I Picked Up This Book Because: Have you ever read a Charley book you didn’t like? Me either

The Characters:

Charley Davidson:
Rey’azikeen:

The Story:

I’m not going to lie the ending of this book has me traumatized and I find it wholly unfair that I have to wait a year for the next installment. An entire 12 months! I can’t even.

Something I also forget is these stories take place relatively close together. Even though I’ve been enjoying Charley’s whit and wisdom for years the storyline has only covered a fraction of that time. Beep is still just a teeny tiny whoopit. (That’s an infant for those not in the know.) I really wish Charley got to spend more time with her. I would love to see her and Reyes tackle being more hands on as parents.

But back to this story. Charley is as usual busy with several cases at once. Trying to clear her friend Peri and find the real murderer, a string of supernatural deaths oh and let us not forget the god who escaped from the god glass in her husband body and his quest to find… we don’t know what. (I mean we find out but you have to read that on your own) Charley handles life in a sleep deprived whirlwind of grace and sleep deprived Charley charm. I really have no bad words to say about this story, okay there were quite a few bad words at 93% and some more after that but they were good bad words.

Writing: I devoured these words like Charley devours gods.
Overall Interest: Loved every second.
Length of Reading Time: As usual in my life I had feast or famine days for reading.
Re-read-ability: The more I read and think about this series the more I want to do an epic re-read.. well re-listen, I really love Lorelei King’s interpretation of Charley.

Yours
Yours - Jasinda Wilder

I Picked Up This Book Because: The author sent an email and the blurb sounded really good. (It was not wrong)

The Characters:

Lachlan “Lock” Montgomery:
Niall James:

The Story:

This story was lovely, heartbreaking, action packed, sexy and everything in between.

Writing: So good. It’s very easy to be snatched out of reality while reading this book.
Forward Motion: There was a bit of a lull for me while Lock and Niall both wrestle with their indecision. I personally am an overthinker and it bugs me when characters do it. Otherwise the pages fly by.
Overall Interest: I was total enraptured. 50 or 60 pages could fly by for me in the wink of an eye.
Length of Reading Time: I unfortunately had feast or famine days while reading this due to life. But overall I would say it fine
Re-read-ability: I don’t think I would reread this book. It sits close to my heart as is.

Lost Lake
Lost Lake - Sarah Addison Allen, Janet Metzger

Lost Lake, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’m a fan of the author.

The Characters:

Kate Pheris, Devin Pheris, Eby Pim, Wes Patterson, Lisette Durand, Jack Humphry, Selma Koules, Bulahdeen Ramsey:

The Story:

This book had a wonderful ensemble cast and a beautiful story. I love that we got a moment to learn about each of them even though the overall story was concentrated on Kate, Devin and Eby. This was a great book to listen to and get lost in the moment with.

Writing: Effortless. The scenes were painted wonderfully but the author and brought to life so easily by the narrator. I did not go into this book realizing it was a series but what a delightful surprise. I can not wait to explore more of this small town.
Forward Motion: Good.
Overall Interest: Loved it. Found myself sitting in my car at my destination several times just listening.
Length of Reading Time: 7 days = decent time
Re-read-ability: I would not re-read as I do not want the ending to change. *Insert cheeky wink here*

Midnight Jewel
Midnight Jewel (The Glittering Court) - Richelle Mead, Kyla Garcia
  The Glittering Court, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Next in the series.

The Characters:

Mirabelle Viana:
Grant:

The Story:

This book, much like The Glittering Court from what I can remember, seem to be several stories wound up and bunched together as one. And I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, it just makes it hard for me to write a review. Factor in that most of this was listened to while driving so notes couldn’t be made. I’ll just use my Score Card to talk about this in general.

Writing: Excellent. So many storylines but all were clear and concise. Intricate and relatable. I wanted to root for Mira and I’m sorry how some of it ended. Mira was talented in being in the right place at the right time.
Forward Motion: This story was fast paced but never left the reader behind or lost in all the action.
Overall Interest: I couldn’t wait to finish it. I listened to a good 3 hours of the story while baking Saturday morning instead of my usual mindless TV.
Length of Reading Time: Took about 8 days for 400+ pages. Not too bad.
Re-read-ability: I doubt I will revisit this series. It’s excellent however once seems to be enough.
