Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes.  Read With Me

Can’t Let Go
Can't Let Go - Gena Showalter

The Original Heartbreakers, Book 5

I Picked Up This Book Because: I like the author.

The Characters:

Ryanne Wade:
Jude Laurent:
Brock, Lindy, Dorothea and Daniel

The Story:

I enjoyed Jude and Ryanne’s story even though their alternate stubbornness got on my nerves sometimes. Jude’s constant battle to not continue to live and constantly push Ryanne away irked me. Ryanne is a better woman than me. I wouldn’t have given him so many chances. Then again, I don’t want him the way Ryanne does. Her fierceness will keep him in line for years to come.

The Random Thoughts:

I love that the video games Ryanne loves so much are named after other Gena Showalter book series and that the kitties are named after the Lords of the Underworld.

The Fragile Ordinary
The Fragile Ordinary - Samantha Young
I Picked Up This Book Because: I like the author.

The Characters:

Comet Caldwell: loner and bookworm
Tobias King: new guy, delinquent reformed to his previous good guy statis
Comet’s friends Vicki and Steph.

The Story:

Comet would rather be lost in a fictional world than out in the world with real people until Tobias King transfers to her school. The troubled American teenager is running with a rough and fast crowd while living with his cousin. After being assigned to work together on a class project Tobias and Comet get to know each other and even become friends. Their relationship further blossoms into the romantic variety. Both have issues in their home life that must be forced and overcome but they find they can do these things as they lean on each other.

Of course it’s not all sunshine and roses but they find a way to persevere. I liked Comet almost right away, Tobias too once we got to know him a bit. They both came from situations that made them have to grow up quick. That can do a number on anyone and I think they handled it the best they could.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life - Mark Manson

I Picked Up This Book Because: The title.

The bottom line of this book is not to care at all but to carefully cultivate the things you care, give a f*ck, about. There are many examples and stories that have led to and support Mark’s reasonings on why we can’t give a f*ck about everything. I agree with many of his points and have some deeper thinking to do on some others.

We’re Going to Need More Wine
We're Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True - Gabrielle Union
I Picked Up This Book Because: Curiosity

The Story:

I’m struggling to sum up this book. I can say the title is true, I needed wine. Not because there were bad stories but because some of the stories were so intense. Gabrielle was charming, amusing and at time brutally honest. I found very much in common with her early life experiences. I learned a lot about grace, triumph and dignity with the stories from her late teens and early twenties. I will reflect on many of the experiences she has had from her career and learning to raise a family.

I’m glad she shared this piece of her soul with the world and I’m glad I took the time to listen to it.

The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl
The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl - Issa Rae

The Story:

Sitting here a full 26 hours after finishing I don’t have anything significant to say about this book. I enjoyed listening to it. I laughed and commiserated with Issa’s pain. I had wonderful nostalgic memories of 90’s music. I was jealous that I didn’t come from such a multicultural family and do not speak more than one language.

Overall the book was well written and narrated and kept me interested.

The Thief
The Thief - J.R. Ward

Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 16

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series, love the author, love the characters. Pick one.

The Characters:

Sola:
Assail:
Pretty much any other BDB character you can think of makes an appearance- or is mentioned. Jane and Vicious are also pretty heavily featured.

The Story:

There is soooo much going on in this book. I’m just going to stick to the main storylines of Assail/Sola for the review. I won’t like. I’ve never liked Assail. Have always kinda zoned out on his parts of pervious books, however when it come to him and Sola I’ve been there for it. I like Sola. I like her strength and I like her love for her grandmother. Her relationship with Assail, though strained at times, seems meant to be. She wants a partnership and though he will have to do some adjusting to get used to that idea the seem to belong together. I do wonder how we are going to handle Sola aging.

Jane and Vicious go through a very rough time in their mating in this book also. And the new challenges that Throe is coming up with have me excited for the future. Honestly I hope this series never ends.

Royal Treatment
Royal Treatment - Tracy Wolff

His Royal Hotness, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: I like the author.

The Characters:

Garrett: Former Crown Prince of Wildemar
Lola Barnes: American self made business woman

The Story:

A story of insta lust that turns to love. Garrett is broken from surviving an abduction that lead to three months of torture only to be followed by his father taking away his rightful place in line to become king. Lola happens upon him at a lake while visiting Wildemar to shop for her vintage clothing business. Sparks fly immediately.

I loved Garrett and Lola’s chemistry. Love that Lola is a sassy smarty pants and that Garrett loved her for it. I really loved how they considered each other every step of the way. Even when they got it wrong it came from a place of I want him/her to have/be the best they can.

The story started off really slow for me. So slowly in fact that I didn’t pick the book up at all for a week or so. I’m really glad I gave it a second chance.

Personal Escort
Personal Escort - Ainsley Booth
Billionaire Secrets, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Cara Russo:
Toby Hunt:

The Story:

A best friend’s little sister and friends to lovers story wrapped up in one. These are two of my favorite tropes so I loved the story. I am coming to love Ms Booth’s writing more and more. The characters click with me and I care about their happiness and triumphs.

Cara and Toby are no exception. They have a great bond built on friendship and trust. I enjoyed their connection, their banter and their steamy hot love scenes.

Gossip Girl
Gossip Girl - Cecily von Ziegesar

Gossip Girl, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’ve been curious about this book for quite some time.

The Characters:

Blair, Chuck, Nate, Serena, Dan, Jenny:
70 other people (ok I exaggerate, 69 other people)

The Story:

I think I passed my prime on this one. I thought this would be intriguing but I found it annoying. The Blair, Nate, Serena triangle was dumb. Blair should have seen right away that Nate was way more into Serena. Who wants to be the one he settled for? Chuck seemed annoying but not an interesting annoying. Jenny and Dan also bored me with their idealism of Serena.

I personally found very little attracting about the 51 pages of this book that I struggled through. I’ll stick with my memories of the TV show.

XOXO

Eleventh Grave In Moonlight
Eleventh Grave in Moonlight - Darynda Jones

Re-Read:
April 25 - May 1

What can I say about this series or this book that I haven’t said before? There’s nothing. These books are just so good, so addictive. Oh I did have one compliant. Charley knows how to shift and spy from a different plain why didn’t she do that before going and getting herself kidnapped? Oh well and amazing story nonetheless and the ending has me so ready for book number 12 but I’m going to split up my re-read just a little bit cause 2019 is a long time away for book 13.

Monthly Run Down - April 2018

Books I Read:

Ice Planet Barbarians  - 2 Stars - This was a struggle

If Someone Says “You Complete Me” Run!  - 4 Stars - Picked this back up on audio and it was great. Whoopi and I share a lot of ideas about relationships and being a “whole” person on your own.

Personal Delivery - 4 Stars -  These characters had amazingly hot chemistry.

Screwdrivered - 3.5 Stars - Audiobook: I didn’t like the way the narrator made the heroin sound. Also she fantasized way too much for me.

The Course of Tenth Grave - 4 Stars - Re-read. Charley being Charley is always great.

Becoming Kareem: Growing Up On and Off the Court - 4 Stars - My most surprising read of the month, maybe the year.

DNF:

None this month!

Currently Reading:

Gossip Girl - Cecily von Ziegesar - Only reading while at my day job so it’s going slow.

Eleventh Grave in Moonlight - Darynda Jones - I would have finished this yesterday (in April) but I had company in my car. I’ll finish it today.

Royal Treatment - Tracy Wolff - I don’t have concrete interest in this book. I’m reading it to finish it right now, which means it will take forever.

Becoming Kareem: Growing Up On and Off the Court
Becoming Kareem: Growing Up On and Off the Court - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

I Picked Up This Book Because: Seemed like a good idea at the time.

I’m not sure what I was expecting. I knew Kareem was a basketball player and I knew I would be hearing about his life. I was surprised to learn what a deep thinker he is. How educated and well read. How he lived and dealt with the civil unrest going on in the country while trying to build a professional career.

I think hearing this in Kareem’s voice made it feel so much more personal. Kareem is not just a record setting athlete. He is a man of many interest with quite a few tales to tell. More than even those in this book I’m sure.
