Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes.  Read With Me

Rich People Problems
Rich People Problems: A Novel - Kevin Kwan

Crazy Rich Asians, Book 3

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Again the cast of this book is legion, just like the last two. We do spend time with Rachel and Nick, Astrid, Michael and Colin, Charlie Wu, Kitty, Oliver and we don’t talk to her but Colette also.

The Story:

There is never any good way for me to sum up these books. Too much happens. So here’s a random list of impressions I’m left with. I’m so happy for Nick and Rachel. I’m glad Rachel told off her mother in law, the chick is too pushy. I cried at Su Yi’s funeral. It was a beautiful and emotional scene. Michael is the worst and Isabella isn’t far above him on the list. They did not have to treat Charlie and Astrid that way. However, I am glad that the situation they were put in allowed Astrid to find her freedom and lead to a happier life for herself. (view spoiler) I was somewhat shocked by Colette. I don’t remember much of her from China Rich Girlfriend but I know I don’t like her. I think Kitty’s obsession with her is beyond unhealthy and she needs help. Also when a kid can tell you in a full sentence that he is hungry breastfeeding time is over but I’m nobody’s parent so….

Overall I truly enjoyed this book. There were so many revelations. I do hope Mr Kwan writes another installment.

Southern Eclectic, Book 1.5

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

The Characters:

Frankie McCready:
Eric Linden:
Several dozen other McCready’s,

The Story:

A cute short catching up on the goings on in this kooky little town. Eric moves in to become the new Sheriff but her and Frankie have a connection that no one else in town knows about. I can’t wait to see how that unfolds in the next book.

Children of Blood and Bone
Children of Blood and Bone: The OrÏsha Legacy (Children of OrÏsha) - Tomi Adeyemi

The Legacy of Orisha, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I had to read at least one super hyped book of 2018.

The Characters:

Zélie Adebola:
Zane Adebola, Amari, Amari’s brother (I can’t remember his name right now)

The Story:

Zelie and her crew go on a hell of an adventure to restore magic to her people and it’s a great story. My only beef is why do these “great” stories always seem to hinge on the pain, degradation and/or genocide of a people. Those situations always leave me with conflicted feeling of how “great” a book is. So much death and destruction. However I still rate this very highly because it is so amazing the work the author put into the stories. The strong characters she created were amazing and I found myself completely engrossed in the story at times.

The Worst Witch
The Worst Witch - Jill Murphy
The Worst Witch, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I loved the movie as a kid and recently discovered it was based on this book.

The Characters:

Mildred Hubble:
Maud:
Ethel Hallow, Miss Cackle, Miss Hardbroom

The Story:

Mildred Hubble lives an uncharmed life. She tries her best but things always seem to go wrong. It doesn’t help that her Form Mistress seems to be against her and her enemy Ethel Hallow is showing her up at every turn.

This is a very cute book that would be a great family read. Mildred’s hijinks make for a delightful time. I look forward to reading more.

Snowbound with the Single Dad
Snowbound with the Single Dad - Cara Colter

I Picked Up This Book Because: I liked the cover.

The Characters:

Noelle “Ellie” McGregor:
Aiden Phillips:
Rufus McGregor, Bertanana “Nana” Sutton, Tess Phillips

The Story:

The concept of this story was great however the writing seemed immature. An I mean immature in the sense that it needed a good editing and revision. Like maybe it was the authors first book. (I’ve never seen so many exclamation points in a book.)

So with that out of the way I loved the characters. Grandpa Rufus was my favorite. How he managed to put all this together was beautiful and we never find out if he knew Noelle and Aiden would get on or not but I’m glad it unraveled the way it did. There was a ton of delicious sexual tension between Aiden and Ellie. There was also a substantial amount of overthinking which doesn’t thrill me but I see why it was included. Tess was a little ray of light throughout the book and it’s so good to see adults set aside their differences and put the child first. I hope this family has many more lovely Christmas celebrations together.

Immortal Unchained
Immortal Unchained - Lynsay Sands

Argeneau, Book 25

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

The Characters:

Sarita Reyes :
Domitian Argenis:
Dr. Dressler, Thorn, Abuela, Mrs Dressler

The Story:

I’m in a less than enthusiastic mood today meaning the shortness of my review is in no way a reflection on the book. I just don’t have the umph to gush.

I quite enjoyed this book. Domitian is a dream life mate. Does he have a brother? Sartia is spitfire who reminds me of my own stubborn nature. Dr Dressler is one of the most despicable villains. I want to rail about some of his grievances however I don’t want to give anything away.

Whiskey Dick, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

The Characters:

Remi Kay :
Adam Barclay:
Jenn Barclay

The Story:

Remi is a hot mess. But, she’s a mess that has finally found the right track. I found this book to be laugh out loud funny in some parts but I didn’t get the same engagement that I had with the first book.

Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You
Gmorning, Gnight!: LIttle Pep Talks for Me & You - Lin-Manuel Miranda

I Picked Up This Book Because: I been inspired by these tweets quite often.

Though I’m glad I got the audiobook and I can hear every nuisance behind the words as Lin intends them, I will say audio is not the way to go. These nuggets are probably best digested over time. I can see waking up in the morning flipping to a random page and maybe being inspired to start the day. In fact that is what I intend to do once I purchase a hard copy of my own.

Overall it was lovely to hear Lin’s voice wish me a ton of Gmonrings and Gnights, can he call me everyday?

Gods of War, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I love Gena Showalter books.

The Characters:

Knox of Iviland :
Vale London of Terra:
A billion other monsters

The Story:

An interesting start to a new series. I’m not going to lie I found it extremely easy to drift off while listening to this book. So much so that I probably missed two of fourteen hours, not all at once. I never felt the need to go back and catch up either.

I am disappointed that I don’t feel more love and adoration for this book. It’s perfectly well written but it just didn’t ensnare me.

Quick and Healthy Keto Zone Cookbook: The Holistic Life Style for Losing Weight, Increasing Energy, and Feeling Great - Don Colbert

Good information giving upfront even if it was a bit “selly”. The recipes seemed as easy as the title suggest and I can’t wait to try a few.

How Not to Get Shot: And Other Advice From White People
How Not to Get Shot: And Other Advice From White People - D.L. Hughley

I Picked Up This Book Because: Curiosity

The Book:

I’ve had a very difficult time writing this review. All I can think clearly is that this book made me feel. Injustice, sadness, anger, amusement, righteousness, indignant, low self esteem. I wish this was a book that didn’t need to be written. That we could just flip a switch and people would see that we are all made of the same things. Unfortunately that is not the world we live in.

Since I don’t want to leave this review on a negative note. I’ll say DL did a great job injecting humor into a topic that is inherently humorless. I hope many people read/listen to his words and it makes them think about their own character and how things can change in the world.
