Hi I'm Shannon and I'm a book-a-holic. OK so I know it is not a word but its so true. I love reading and I have a serious book buying/borrowing problem. I read everyday and there is no such thing as no time to read for me, but I always feel like there is not enough time to read.

I’ve decided to start a little Tumblr called Read With Me. It will be updates of the book(s) I am currently reading with full on spoiler reactions to the pages as I read them and perhaps a review at the end. We’ll see how this goes.  Read With Me

Stillhouse Lake
Stillhouse Lake - Rachel Caine
Stillhouse Lake, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’m a fan of Rachel’s Morganville Vampires series so I had to explore what she writes outside of the series.

The Characters:

Gwen Proctor a.k.a. Gina Royal:
Lanny Proctor, Connor Proctor, Javier Esparza, Sam Cade, Kezia Claremont, Melvin “Mel” Royal, Lancel Graham

The Story:

When you are the left behind family of a convicted serial murderer what becomes of your life? For Gwen and her kids it’s a special kind of hell. First blindsided by their family patriarch's crimes then arrested, harassed and always ready to run in fear of retaliation. (view spoiler)

Gwen has strength that I could not imagine. I would have broken down and given up so many times if I was her. I don’t even know what to say to adequately sum her up. THere aren’t words for the extent of a mother’s love I guess. This a battered and broken family that deserves so much more than what they’ve been given to deal with.

I can’t even wrap my head around Mel and Lancel. I’ll just leave that rant for any poor unsuspecting person who ask me about the last good book I’ve read.

This story ended on a cliffhanger but we do get closure for this first book. I still have a billion questions but I guess I will just have to wait for book two.

Ride Baby Ride
Ride Baby Ride (Thompson & Sons Book 1) - Vivian Arend

Thompson & Sons, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’m a fan of Vivian Arend’s writing

The Characters:

Katy Thompson:
Gage Jenick:

The Story:

Gage finally has his moment to snag the woman of his dreams, who also happens to be his best friends little sister. Unfortunately this moment comes right before Gage is scheduled for a six month stint on the oil lines up north. Gage couldn’t wait, he declares his intentions and spends a passion filled night with Katy topped off with the promise of a relationship when her returns. In another turn of misfortune Katy has a car accident right after Gage leaves (literally right after) and loses her short term memory. She doesn’t remember her night with Gage, her breakup with her controlling ex and finds herself pregnant to boot.

I loved it from the get go. Gage and Katy had chemistry and such an easy rapport. This was a short and sweet and I hope we see them again in the future of the series.

Capture
CAPTURE: Elements of Chemistry (Hypothesis Series Book 3) - Penny Reid

  Elements of Chemistry, Book 3

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Kaitlyn Parker:
Martin Sandeke:

The Story:

The conclusion of Katy and Martin.

I was unequivocally hooked at this point. There was no way I couldn’t see if a reunion was made. Fortunately all went well. Now that darn Katy got in her own way so often I didn’t think they were going to make it. Her frequent exclamation of “GAH” and endless confusion were starting to get on my nerves. I like the changes that both characters made in the end. Martin practicing being nice is hilarious.

Overall this was a great series. I loved watching Katy and Martin fall in love. I would love to see them again in the future. *hint hint*

Heat
Heat: Elements of Chemistry (Hypothesis) (Volume 2) - Penny Reid

  Elements of Chemistry, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Kaitlyn Parker:
Martin Sandeke:

The Story:

In the second installment of Katy and Martin we get to know Martin better and we also get our heart broken. Yes, the inevitable break up happens and I cried my eyes out right along with Katy. The story gets so heartbreaking but I was still compelled to finish.

The Random Thoughts:

-Katy over thinks everything! And it’s beginning to get a bit annoying. (says the overthinker)

Home: A Memoir of My Early Years
Home: A Memoir of My Early Years - Julie Andrews Edwards

I Picked Up This Book Because: Saw it in the library and was curious.

The Story:

This depicts Julie’s life up until she heads to LA to film Mary Poppins. I must say I was disappointed not to get the details of her time on set of Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music as these were the two titles I was most familiar but I learned so much about her life prior that honestly there was no room for much more.

Julie was born with show business in her bones. I am not surprised at the amazing person she has become because she had an amazing, if difficult at times, start. I always enjoy listening to people tell their own story and Julie’s narration of her book was superb.

Attraction: Elements of Chemistry #1
Attraction: Elements of Chemistry (Hypothesis) (Volume 1) - Penny Reid

Hypothesis, Book 1.1

I Picked Up This Book Because: It was a Kindle freebie.

The Characters:

Martin Sandeke: Strong, possessive and a “jerk-face”
Kaitlyn “Katy” Parker: Logical, introvert, stupid smart.

The Story:

After Katy uncovers a plot to harm her lab partner, Martin he reveals his true feelings for her. Martin ends up whisking Katy and her best friend Sam away to a private island for a spring break getaway where they decide to take some time to get to know each other. Katy has already made up her mind that Martin and she will never happen but he does his best to try and change it.

This book reminded me what joy could be with reading. It was fun and free and covered a range of emotions. I felt an instant connection to Katy. We don’t learn much about Martin but I hear that changes in book two. He obviously has some things he needs to come to terms with and Katy is ready to take on that challenge. This really was a delight to read.

I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons
I Can't Make This Up: Life Lessons - Kevin Hart, Neil Strauss
I Picked Up This Book Because: Kevin Hart wrote it. You dog on right I’m going to read it.

This book depicts the beginnings of Kevin Hart. From short kid with zero free time, thanks to his mom’s determination to keep him off the streets, to the superstar funny man we all know and love today. It wasn’t an easy trip and his success didn’t happen overnight but it is so inspiring. Kevin has a drive and determination that so few people have. His ability to shrug off the negative, the rejections, the setbacks have surely served him well.

The book covers his personal life also. From growing up with a semi estranged dad who was on drugs to his mother’s protectiveness to his relationship with his ex-wife and the beginnings of his relationship with his current wife. I love the way he speaks of his children and how he wants them to know that they have because of his hustle and they will need to develop their own once they are adults.

I feel like this book is perfect for anyone who is ready to chase their dream. Who needs motivation and encouragement to keep going even with the plan is not working as you thought it would.

The Random Thoughts:

I would have loved to listen to this in audiobook form. If Kevin narrates it's going to be amazingly funny.

Bound Together
Bound Together (Sea Haven) - Christine Feehan
Sisters of the Heart, Book 6

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continuation of series.

The Characters:

Viktor “Zar” Prakenskii: Oldest Prakenskii brother, head of Torpedo Ink
Blythe Daniels: The heart of the Sisters and another large family that she is about to meet.

The Story:

I’m feeling lazy and not in the mood to write a full summary, with that said this book is dark! Lots of child moslestation, other deep fears and violence. There is also plenty of sexy times, some humor and the beginning of a family being built. (Maybe growing would be a better word.)

The narrator did a wonderful job. Lots a voices in this one and she nailed them all.

The Chosen
The Chosen: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood - J.R. Ward, Jim Frangione, Random House Audio
Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 15

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continuation of an awesome series

The Characters:

Layla: Former Chosen, new Mahaman
Xcor: Reformed Bastard
Qhuinn: Brother, Protector, Asshole first class.
Blay: A good male trying to make sense of a very complicated family

This book also focuses on V, Trez and Terese

The Story:

I have to start with throughout 92% of this book I wanted to punch Qhuinn right in his nose. He’s never been the easiest male but the way he treated not only Layla but baby Lyric was inexcusable. With that being said, so freaking much went on with this book. (view spoiler) I just can’t with making a summary that makes any sense or does the book any bit of justice. I can’t wait for the next book.

The McCullagh Inn in Maine
The McCullagh Inn in Maine - Erin Bennett, Jen McLaughlin, James Patterson - foreword
I Picked Up This Book Because: Wanted a quick listen while waiting for my next audiobook to be available at the library

The Characters:

Chelsea O’Kane: A woman who is really good at running from her past. First she runs from her home in Maine to Florida then she runs right back after life there became a mess.
Jeremy Holland: Former best friend who never got over his real first love.

The Story:

This book reaches out and grabs you from the first sentence. A stolen car with a gun on the passenger seat! What is going on?!? But it quickly devolves into a more predictable tale. Second chance love, revenge from “the cartels and a HEA (which I wanted). Overall it was just an okay story.

Rock Redemption (Rock Kiss) (Volume 3) - Nalini Singh
Rock Kiss, Book 3

I Picked Up This Book Because: I fell in love quickly with this series and Nalini Singh’s writing.

The Characters:

Katherine “Kit” Devigny:
Noah St. John :

The Story:

Kit is way too good for Noah and I honestly can’t sit and listen to her be in love with him while he uses her to be his friend. I am sure there is an amazing story here but I don’t have the patience to get there.

My Not So Perfect Life
My Not So Perfect Life - Sophie Kinsella

I Picked Up This Book Because: I’ve been a fan of Sophie Kinsella’s work for years. I pick up everything she puts out.

The Characters:

Katie Brenner:

The Story:

I am practically in tears as I type this. Katie has bored me into DNF-ing this book. I’ve never DNF’d a Sophie Kinsella book. I can usually slog through and find the good in even my least favorite book (looking at you Twenties Girl). Considering I found Finding Audrey to be one of the best books I read in 2016 I’m really disappointed that I could not move any further in this book. Seriously I was cleaning to avoid reading it. Oh well, it won’t stop me from picking up the next book published by Ms Kinsella.

The Original Sinners: White Years, Book 1

I Picked Up This Book Because: I have previously enjoyed Tiffany Reisz’s writing.

The Characters:

Eleanor “Nora” Sutherlin:

The Story:

At this point I can’t even remember. I first picked this book up in January, it is now May and every time I’ve attempted to pick it back up I put it right back down. I want to like it but I just can’t get into it. It makes me sad.

How to be a BAWSE: A Guide to Conquering Life
How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life - Lilly Singh
I Picked Up This Book Because: Who doesn’t want to be a BAWSE? Seriously it’s time to work on the things I know I can do in life.

The Story:

I finished this audiobook at about 5:30 by 7:15 I had ordered the hardcover from Amazon.

Lilly is so inspiring and positive. I honestly hadn’t really heard of her before her appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon but once I heard her talking about the book she wrote I was intrigued. I was so happy when my library had the audiobook. I’ll be honest this kind of book is best listened to for me. As I listened and was inspired I am feeling more confident in 2017 being a year of change for me. I’ve had so many conversations with close friends and family about a lot of the concepts Lilly talks about. She has taken some ideas and expanded them to places I didn’t even think of. I’m anxious to get the hard copy and start applying some concepts to real life. Thank goodness for amazon prime.

The Beast
The Beast (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series) - J.R. Ward

Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 12

I Picked Up This Book Because: BDB is one of my favorite series. How I managed to skip this book confuses and astounds me.

The Characters:

Rhage:
Mary:
Bitty:

The rest of the Brotherhood their mates and other members of the family.

The Story:

I had quite the emotional ride with this one. Though I bet that would be true with any JR Ward book I read. Watching Rhage and Mary form a family. The new chapter start in Layla’s life. It all had me so enraptured. I am unsettled that Xcor seems to get forgotten. However I don’t like his character so it wasn’t much skin off my nose. Also Assail had a lot more page time that I would have cared for BUT I’m curious about his new role and even coming to like him a bit.
